GoMRI Funding Programs

Year-One Block Grants (June 2010)

$45 million in funding provided directly from BP to Gulf State Institutions and the National Institutes of Health to establish critical baseline data as the foundation for subsequent research as well as support for studying the health of the oil spill workers and volunteers.

RFP-I - Consortia Grants (Years 2-4, August 2011)

$110 million in grants to eight research consortia comprising experts from over six-dozen research institutions in 27 U.S. states and five countries.

RFP-II - Investigator Grants (Years 3-5, August 2012)

$18.5 million in grants to 19 individuals or collaborative efforts involving a principal investigator (PI) and up to three co-principal investigators (co-PIs) from no more than three additional institutions.

RFP III - Bridge Grants (July 2011)

$1.5 million in grants to seventeen projects supporting the continuity of observations and sampling while the peer-review process was underway for Year 2-4 Consortia.

RFP-IV - Consortia Grants (Years 5-7, January 2015)

$140 million in grants to twelve research consortia.

RFP-V - Investigator Grants (Years 6-8, January 2016)

$38 million in grants awarded to individuals and teams studying the effects of oil on the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem and public health. A total of 22 research proposals are being funded under this most recent GoMRI program.

RFP-VI - Research Grants (Years 8-10, January 2018)

$50 million in grants to support research into effects of the Deepwater Horizon incident on the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem. A total of 31 research proposals - 8 Research Consortia and 23 small research teams.
