Year One Block Grants

$45 million in funding provided directly from BP to Gulf State Institutions and the National Institutes of Health to establish critical baseline data as the foundation for subsequent research as well as support for studying the health of the oil spill workers and volunteers.

Year One Block Grant Recipients

Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO)

BP awarded the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) a $10 million research award. The initial research projects focused on collection of baseline water quality data from the Gulf's surface and its depths in areas not yet affected by the spill.

Louisiana State University (LSU)

Louisiana State University (LSU) was awarded $10 million to recognize and support its research expertise relevant to the oil-spill crisis, including its environmental science and ecology, engineering, coastal science and humanities departments.

Marine Environmental Science Consortium (MESC)

The Alabama Marine Environmental Science Consortium (MESC) received a $5 million research award from BP. The consortium selected four research themes and established a category for Small Grants for Exploratory Research.

Northern Gulf Institute (NGI)

The Northern Gulf Institute (NGI) received a $10 million research award to fund oil-spill related research in two phases: (phase 1) nine fast-track, high-priority studies with researchers who were in the field to continue critical monitoring and assessment activities in areas affected in the Gulf region; and (phase 2) peer-reviewed selection of twenty-five collaborative research projects with a focus on observing and understanding regional impacts on coastal ecosystems and society.
