FIO Block Grant

BP awarded the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) a $10 million research award. The initial research projects focused on collection of baseline water quality data from the Gulf's surface and its depths in areas not yet affected by the spill. Scientists also evaluated potential impacts of chemical dispersants as well as spilled oil on delicate coral reefs, fisheries and marine mammals. Twenty-seven projects were funded that included twenty-two institutions. FIO is a consortium of twenty public and private research centers in Florida, including the eleven state universities. The University of South Florida serves as the host institution for the consortium. For additional information, read the FIO press release.

For an overview of the FIO Block Grant research, see the FIO Research Presentation from the GoMRI Fall 2011 Meeting in New Orleans.
