Sea Grant Brings Partnership with GoMRI to NOAA for Oil Spill Preparedness

Posted on April 26, 2017
The Sea Grant Oil Spill Outreach Program is collaborating with NOAA entities to extend the two-way dialogue with sectors who were impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Ten Outstanding Education Products Six Years After Deepwater Horizon

Posted on April 20, 2016
Communicating oil spill research is essential to improve society’s understanding about spills and their ability to respond to and mitigate them. The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) has been funding spill-related research since 2010.

Research on Dispersants that Informs Oil Spill Response

Posted on April 27, 2015
The prevention or reduction of coastline oiling was high on responders’ priorities immediately following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Five years later, much discussion continues about balancing benefits and risks regarding dispersants, and there are increased research efforts for alternatives or enhancements to existing dispersant systems.

Project Activities

Get to Know CARMMHA Co-PI Brian Balmer
Balmer leads the Coastal Dolphin Health Assessment component of the consortium. His group collects baseline health data on northern Gulf of Mexico dolphins, assesses potential Deepwater Horizon oil impacts, and tracks dolphins’ movement patterns using satellite tagging. Learn more about Balmer and his research here.

CARTHE Co-Hosts Educator Professional Development Workshop
ANGARI Foundation partnered with the consortium to give eight South Florida teachers research experience that they could use to teach ocean currents and drifter technology in their classrooms. The teachers learned about ongoing drifter research and applications, discussed available drifter resources and lesson plan ideas, and launched a drifter from the R/V ANGARI (provided by MetOcean Telematics).

Video Highlights C-IMAGE Research
The University of South Florida’s Research & Innovation group recently compiled a short video highlighting the consortium’s dedication to understanding Deepwater Horizon’s impacts on the Gulf of Mexico. Learn more about the project’s research here.

ECOGIG Documentary to Show at International Film Festival
The short film “Jewels of the Gulf,” which follows researchers investigating oil’s ongoing impacts to deep-sea coral, will be shown at the 41st Annual International Wildlife Film Festival in the “Deep Dive” short film block. Event and ticketing information can be found here.

RECOVER Releases First Installment of Mini Tag Video Series
The series “Mini Mahi Tags” follows consortium researchers who are using scaled-down, non-data-collecting “mini” tags designed by Wildlife Computers specifically for RECOVER research. Part 1 introduces master’s student C.J. McGuigan, whose hatchery research assesses the behavioral changes and metabolism of captive mahi carrying the satellite tags. Watch the video here!
